What to wear to your engagement session (2026 outfit guide & tips)

Wide scenic landscape photography capturing a bride and groom on the shore of Lake Tekapo.
You’ve got the ring, you’ve locked in your favorite location, and now comes the big question: what to wear for your engagement session? As New Zealand wedding and engagement photographers, we know that what you choose to wear plays a massive role in how relaxed you feel in front of the camera.
We have created a list of tips & tricks, as well as do’s & don’t s. When it comes to what to wear to your couple session, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Everyone has their own style. This comprehensive guide is packed with expert styling tips to help you choose the perfect outfit layout. Our goal is to ensure your images feel timeless, genuine, and completely reflective of your unique love story.
For a one hour session I recommend going with up to two outfits, so it can showcase a more formal side of you, as well as who you are authentically when you are together. Think of this as an opportunity to show you both at your best – when life is the best, and when you dress up to impress.
While it is tempting to bring many options, changing clothes for more than two outfits can eat up valuable shooting time, disrupting the flow of the session. Sticking to one or two well-planned looks strikes the perfect balance between variety and keeping the session fun and energetic.

1. Prioritize comfort & movement

hoosing what to wear for your couple or engagement photos can be daunting – but it doesn’t have to be! The most important thing is to be comfortable and feel like yourself—that’s what we’re looking to capture. With that in mind, consider wearing something relaxed that you can move around in.

2. Wear airy, muted, earthy, or soft colors.

These colors look timeless, & flattering. If you want the focus of your photos to be on you and your partner’s love for each other and not so much your clothes, neutrals are the way to go. Wearing earthy, soft colors help keep the focus on you as your outfits blend into the landscape. Tan, beige, white and browns work great for this, but they aren’t your only options! Muted blues, greens, pinks and even black can get the job done, too.

3. Wear colors that compliment each other.

You might want to match outfits, and while there is nothing wrong with that, sometimes matching outfits can look dated down the line. Instead, we suggest choosing clothes with colors or prints that complement each other as you decide what to wear for your engagement sessions.

4. Less is more

Large patterns can be distracting and make you look larger than you are. Stick to solid colors or small patterns (tho not teeny tiny ones, more below).

Be sure that you aren’t both wearing patterns either; this can be distracting. Also, logos and text on your clothing can be a little too busy and take away from the focus of the photo, which is you. So leave the branded clothing at home for this one. And finally, try to avoid anything that will date the photo quickly. You don’t want people to see your photo and think “that was taken in 2025” So ditch the trendy clothes and go for a classic look that will stand the test of time.

The ones we love:
-Small florals or soft patterns such as strokes or swirls
-Checks: gingham, ones with fine lines or complementing colours
-Thin stripes

Ones we avoid:
-Bold stripes, florals or polka dots
-Big statement graphics
-Logos and slogans

5. bring the heels

Heels are a fabulous way to make a outfit look more or less formal. Bring heels that you can comfortably walk in. And bring a back up pair of comfy shoes in case.

6. Accessories

Accessories can make a outfit more formal or casual. Utilize jewelry, necklaces, earrings, rings, hair accessories, belts, shoes, hats, etc.

I also encourage you to bring along a jacket (weather depending) or something that you can easily throw on to add variety to your photos without having to completely change clothes (and keep you warm).

7. things to avoid

Spray Tans

Large logos or text on clothing

Neon clothes

Be aware of any tan lines and how they look with your chosen outfits

Some shirts with the super tiny checkered pattern on them create a “static-y” type of look on camera – feel free to send me a picture if you’re unsure!

Don’t only bring stiletto heels if you’re not used to wearing them and walking around – if you do, maybe also bring flip flops so you don’t murder your feet!

Don’t wear every piece of jewelry you own. Editing your accessories will make a stronger photo!

8. Some great props to bring to your Session

Special things like cute blankets or some couples accessories like matching coffee cups, a favorite beer, a bottle of champagne, a favorite sports team jersey or something that is special can really make your session “you”.

final thoughts

When it comes down to it, deciding what to wear for your engagement session shouldn’t feel like a stressful chore. The clothes you choose are simply there to frame the real focus of the gallery: the genuine laughter, the quiet glances, and the incredible connection you share as a couple.
If you look back at your photos in twenty years, you won’t just remember the outfits you wore. You will remember how it felt to explore the beautiful Canterbury landscape, holding hands and celebrating this unique chapter of your legacy story. Trust your personal style, choose pieces that give you the confidence to move freely, and let us handle the rest.
